Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition Paperback – May 6, 2014
Author: Visit ‘s T. Colin Campbell Page ID: 1939529840

From Publishers Weekly

Campbell’s follow-up to his best-selling The China Study is more of the same, in the best way. He continues his quest to convince people that “the ideal human diet looks like this: Consumer plant-based foods in forms as close to their natural state as possible…eat a variety of vegetables, fruits, raw nuts and seeds, beans and legumes, and whole grains.” The entirety of the book is a passionate and convincing case for that ideal diet. Campbell has not written a book of diet tips, or even provided recipes. In fact, at times the book delves so deeply into scientific process— for example, explaining how cancer develops or how metabolism works—that many may find themselves having to read slowly to understand his point. Yet he makes the case that Americans are too prone to take pills to solve health issues (and doctors too prone to prescribe them) as a result of “reductionist thinking”. His years of scientific study and calm, measured tone are highly convincing, making a firm case that changing one’s diet is the best way to assure good health. Readers will be inclined to put down their processed food snacks once they read what could be a life-changer of a book. (May)

Review

”After reading The China Study and drastically changing my diet toward the more whole food, plant-based diet recommended by Dr. Campbell, my career numbers shot up when they were supposed to be declining. I thought to myself ‘Why doesn’t everyone eat this way?!’ This new book, Whole, answers that question with great clarity. Never again be confused about diet and nutrition.” –Tony Gonzalez, Atlanta Falcons, 16-year National Football League player, record-setting tight end

”America’s premier nutritionist, T. Colin Campbell, with courage and conviction, articulates how the self-serving reductionist paradigm permeates science, medicine, media, big pharma and philanthropic groups blocking the public from the nutritional truth for optimal health.” –Caldwell Esselstyn, Jr., MD, author of the bestselling Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease

”T. Colin Campbell, based on his long career in experimental research and health policy-making, uncovers how and why there is so much confusion about food and health and what can be done about it. His explanation is elegant, sincere, provocative, and far-reaching, including how we can solve our health-care crisis. Read and enjoy; there’s something here to inspire and offend just about everyone (sometimes the truth hurts).” –Dean Ornish, MD, Founder and President of the Preventive Medicine Research Institute in Sausalito, California; Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of California, San Francisco; and author of the bestselling Dr. Dean Ornish’s Program for Reversing Heart Disease

Whole makes a convincing case that modern nutrition’s focus on single nutrients has led to mass confusion with tragic health consequences. Dr. Campbell’s new paradigm will change the way we think about food and, in doing so, could improve the lives of millions of people and save billions of dollars in health care costs.” –Brian Wendel, Creator and Executive Producer of Forks Over Knives

”There are very few material game-changers in life, but this book is truly one of them. The information herein — backed up by extraordinary peer-reviewed science — has the power to halt and reverse disease, give you energy you’ve never known, and put you on a path of transformation in just about every positive way. Read it and get ready to soar.” –Kathy Freston, New York Times bestselling author of The Lean and Quantum Wellness

”Dr. Colin Campbell opened our eyes with The China Study. In Whole, Dr. Campbell boldly shows exactly how our understanding of nutrition and health has gone off track and how to get it right. Beautifully and clearly written, this empowering book will forever change the way you think about health, food and science.” –Neal Barnard, Founder and President of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine

”This book is the key to understanding how to increase our natural longevity and health, it is key to slowing global warming, and all of this at no cost, rather, at immeasurable savings to society.” –Mike Fremont, World Record Holder marathons for 88 and 90 year olds

”In Whole, Dr. Campbell defines a super-paradigm that elucidates a philosophy — wholism — which medicine needs to aspire to in order to attain an enlightened solution. Whole is a masterpiece of intellectual triangulation, outlining the past, the present, and the critical next steps in the future of biochemistry, human nutrition, and healthcare. This book is going to unleash a health revolution!” –Julieanna Hever, MS, RD, CPT, author of The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Plant-Based Nutrition and host of What Would Julieanna Do? –This text refers to the MP3 CD edition.

The gist of T. Colin Campbell’s new book, Whole, is this. After publishing his radical landmark The China Study: The Most Comprehensive Study of Nutrition Ever Conducted And the Startling Implications for Diet, Weight Loss, And Long-term Health in 2005, let’s suppose what he reported there is true. Eight years later, why hasn’t that information and perspective broken through to more widespread awareness? Why hasn’t your doctor or dietitian told you about it, or heard of it, or given it serious consideration? Why haven’t school lunches changed across the board? Whole gives answers.

Three p-words permeate Campbell’s thesis here: profits, power, and paradigms. Power and profits drive the big businesses of livestock and processed food, Campbell argues. For elaboration on how the processed food industry influences people’s eating habits against public health while in pursuit of sales and profits, I recommend Salt Sugar Fat: How the Food Giants Hooked Us (2013) or The End of Overeating: Taking Control of the Insatiable American Appetite (2009). More controversially perhaps, Campbell also argues that profit motives fuel the chase for pills, patents, and procedures in "health care" or as Campbell calls it, the "disease care" industries of pharmaceuticals, hospitals, and medical practitioners.
"History is a race between education and catastrophe" -HG Wells, quoted in Whole.

As T. Colin Campbell writes, Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition is built on two basic insights: "First, nutrition is the master key to human health. Second, what most of us think of as proper nutrition–isn’t." While for many (though, alas, still the minority) this isn’t news, showing why this is the case with a carefully crafted, well-researched thoroughness is what makes this a signature T. Colin Campbell book. As anyone who has read The China Study knows, this MIT-trained, 50-plus year veteran of nutritional research and politics packs a crisp and well-trained punch. His power comes from his clarity of expression and the thoroughness of his research. Campbell builds his thesis with tight reasoning, backed by solid research that considers the big picture. That’s why, even if you feel like you don’t need convincing, it’s great to have the data and clear rationale beyond what may feel intuitive to you; that is, that a whole foods, plant-based diet is the healthiest diet there is and our current nutritional-medical complex is harming millions and millions by disguising that nutritional fact (did you know that pharmaceutical companies spend considerably more on political lobbying than defense contractors?).

If you’ve read The China Study, Campbell’s important bestseller, you’ll be familiar with themes in Whole: Rethinking the Science of Nutrition. But the focus is different. As Campbell writes, "The China Study focused on the evidence that tells us the whole foods, plant-based diet is the healthiest human diet. Whole focuses on why it’s been so hard to bring that evidence to light — and on what still needs to happen for real change to take place.

What Remains

What Remains: A Memoir of Fate, Friendship, and Love Audio CD – Abridged, Audiobook
Author: Visit ‘s Carole Radziwill Page ID: 0743550374

From Publishers Weekly

Here’s a very sad story: a middle-class girl is working as a reporter at ABC, where she meets a handsome man from a famous family. They court, marry and become best friends with the husband’s first cousin and his new wife. Abruptly, the reporter’s husband is diagnosed with cancer. He dies, but not before the cousin and his wife (and her sister) die, too, in a senseless plane crash. This would be a heartbreaking story even if it weren’t about Anthony Radziwill, nephew of Jackie Kennedy Onassis, and about his and Carole’s friendship with John and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy. But because its publisher (and, presumably, the author) have decided not to market it as a “Kennedy book” but “a memoir of fate, friendship and love,” it begs consideration on its literary merits. So here goes: Radziwill is a serviceable, if sentimental, writer. She is brave, especially when she describes how cancer became the third party in her marriage, and how she briefly flirted with infidelity. She also knows how to convey the essence of a person with small scenes and quotes (JFK Jr. holding his dying friend’s hand and softly singing a song from their childhood; director Mike Nichols not calling but just coming to the hospital and handing out sandwiches to the nurses). Still, perhaps in Radziwill’s effort to further the myth of its non-Kennedyness, much of this already short book feels padded—with scenes from the author’s childhood and medical details about Anthony’s treatment. Otherwise, much of Radziwill’s writing approaches melodrama, particularly when she recounts that July 1999 night when the plane crashed. At one point, Radziwill scoffs at the “tragedy whores” who luxuriate in Kennedy trauma, and yet she seems to have been unable to resist contributing some crumbs to their feeding frenzy.

I bought this book in an airport because of the cover. The cover photo is one I have in my bedroom. I was in a huge hurry to get a book for the plane ride and I didn’t notice the author’s name particularly.

I read the entire book on that plane ride and it was an out of body experience for me because I have just recently finished helping my sister die. The book reviewer who treated it as though it were a "Kennedy" book disguised as a memoir and alluded that she was somehow capitalizing on a famous name to sell a book obviously isn’t in this club that I now live in. Grief is a horrific world. It’s the story of your life and I think she had to tell it to survive.

First of all, it’s well written (no joke, the woman is a journalist—they practice the craft daily). This reviewer claims the book is "padded" with her childhood experiences. Excuse me, it’s a memoir ! ! ! Childhood MEMORIES are not padding in a MEMOIR. The fact that her marriage — to a person who is happens to be the maternal cousin of John Kennedy—dominates the book is because that was the biggest "story" in her life. So, naturally, a good writer of a MEMOIR will emphasize the biggest story of their life. And, it’s not the biggest story of her life because he had a famous name. It’s the biggest story of her life because her husband was handed a death sentence and she had to help him live knowing he was going to die.

This is NOT a "Kennedy" book (didn’t know that was a category), it’s a memoir that does a most excellent job of describing being in the inner circle of a young person who has been handed a death sentence. I know because I have lived it.

For this author it was her husband. For me, it was my younger sister who got her death sentence at 36.
What Remains after the core of your life is lost? What Remains after fate takes two of your closest friends in a freak accident and your husband dies of cancer all in one month? What Remains is, as always, the living – in this case Carole Radziwill. And the memories.

This is a story within a story. Set in the very public and prominent Kennedy clan’s world, it is an honest view of globally recognizable figures – John Jr. and his wife Carolyn – and Carole’s husband, Anthony – John’s first cousin. There is no "dirt" here, rather a testament to their genuiness and compassion. You will connect with them in a real way, as real people, seeing them through the eyes of a friend – not with rose colored glasses either, but with clear glimpses into very personal moments only accessible to one so close, and those glimpses are very telling.

And yet, this is much more so a story of courage and the strength of the human spirit – the ability to realize a dream and the will to go on when one’s world crumbles. It is a tale of one woman’s hard work, risk, accomplishment and the consuming impact of terminal illness. A tale of improbable love and kinship, and the vagaries of fate – or chance. It is a Cinderella story with a very hard dose of reality thrown in – a bittersweet roller coaster ride. One that, regardless of setting and characters, would be both sad and inspiring – a valuable and rewarding read.

While reading the book, I saw Ms. Radziwill on Oprah being interviewed. She was asked a question about John and Carolyn Kennedy’s marriage – it lead to whether they had sought marriage counseling. As with the entire story her answer was honest – she said they had – but insightful – she commented that sometimes people confuse `fact’ with truth.

I read the authors’ first emotional intelligence book, and I think that 2.0 is a huge improvement. Here’s a chapter by chapter look at why:

FOREWORD BY PATRICK LENCIONI
Lencioni is one of those gurus that has sold millions of books, none about emotional intelligence (EQ). As Lencioni proclaims in the foreword, he’s no EQ expert, but he sees everyday how critical a skill it is to have and he’s so enthusiastic about this book because it’s the first he’s read that actually shows you how to increase your EQ and apply it in your life.

THE JOURNEY
This chapter opens with a riveting story of a surfer who is attacked by a great white shark in California. I won’t spoil it by telling you how, but the story is a great illustration of the power of emotion and how important it is to understand and manage our emotions. This chapter also illustrates how our brains are wired to react to events emotionally before our reason kicks in, and it lays the groundwork for the process by which the rest of the book will teach you to increase your EQ.

THE BIG PICTURE
This chapter teaches what EQ is and what it isn’t. For example, a lot of people mistakenly think that EQ is a part of your personality. To the contrary EQ is separate from your personality, just as it is separate from your intellect, or IQ. It begins to build your understanding of emotions by showing what the five core emotions look like in varying degrees of intensity. Next the authors fun and engaging approach explains studies that illustrate how important EQ is in daily living. They show how your EQ impacts things like your tolerance for change, how you manage stress, even how much money you make!

Author Louise Hay is a teacher, lecturer, and founder of Hay House Publishing. She contends that disease is caused by mental thought patterns, especially patterns of criticism, anger, resentment, and guilt. Festering resentments eat away at the self and can ultimately lead to tumors and cancers. Anger turns into things that burn, boil, or infect the body. A pattern of criticism can turn into diseases like arthritis, and guilt seeks punishment and leads to pain. In this book, Ms. Hay outlines hundreds of diseases and conditions, alphabetically, and the mental patterns that are associated with them, including each vertebrae of the spine. She has discovered these patterns through many years of study, her own work with clients, and her lectures and workshops.
She knows the power of healing by changing mental thought patterns firsthand: she was diagnosed as having cancer of the vagina several years ago. She was already a teacher of healing for several years, and saw it as an opportunity to practice what she preached. Despite knowing the power of replacing negative thought patterns with positive and affirming beliefs, she felt panic like most would at this kind of diagnosis. However, she felt that if she allowed the doctor to operate without changing the mental pattern that created it, the cancer would just come back. In fact, she believes that when cancer comes back, it’s not because the doctor "didn’t get it all", but because the individual never addressed the mental patterns that created the dis-ease in the first place.
In Ms. Hay’s case, she had never acknowledged the deep resentment she carried for being raped when she was 5 years old and being battered as a child. As she says, we are often blind to our own patterns–even if we’re healers or teachers.
Ms.
This little blue book has been a constant companion over the past several years. This is apparent when you see the dog-eared, scotch taped book that might be laying around anywhere in my house. It never seems to stay on the shelf where I could easily locate it! Someone is always touting it here and there as they check up on the little "chronic ailments" that crop up from time to time. "Why do you supposed I broke the fingernail on THAT finger?" "You know that is the same vertebra that keeps going out – let’s look it up and see what your body is telling you" or "You know our whole family seems to favor heart disease….we’re always fighting melancholy and depression." I used to get calls from family and friends to "look up" what’s happening with their various ailments. Now most of them have their own volumes. The more you understand from this book, the more you can see the patterns of communication your body is using to get you to "wake up" and change your thoughts and expectations. Louise Hay is truly a great pioneer in this effort to enlighten us about how it is really true – "As a man thinketh, so is he". I highly recommend this book and the doorway it opens into understanding how each of us can become increIDgly accountable for the level of health we choose to enjoy. Most importantly, I’m grateful for the understanding that you will receive MORE of what you FOCUS on. When you think about the aches and pains – you receive an abundance of those very things! It’s important to remember, as you get older, to refrain from "scuffing your feet along" and pick ’em up and put ’em down with vigor and intention!
I found out about Louise Hay’s books several years ago. This famous "little blue book" has become a regular reference book in my life. I literally own 3 of them, so they are convienently scattered around the house for quick reference.

Louise Hay’s theory of healing physical and mental pain is that every pain and illness that we have has some root in our mental belief system. It is important to read the text in this book, because following the process is the key to making this work for you. Then, you understand how to use the handy reference guide. There are three columns in the guide: the physical or mental problem, the probable cause (the mental or emotional thought) and the New Thought or affirmation to replace the old and help the healing process.

Hay recommends three main points to make this process work for you;

1. It is important to not judge yourself or feel guilty for your physical ailment or pain.

2. It is important for you to "be willing to release the need for the issue".

3. Then, find the corresponding affirmation to help heal your body.

I’ve always been surprised when I have a pain and I look up the emotional and mental thought behind it. It always relates to my life in some degree. I easily blame myself for my ailments, so I need to remind myself to not feel guilty about contributing to the problem. I just step back and work on allowing to let the problem go and then recite the affirmation in my mind.

This has really helped me to get in touch more with my body and emotions. I can see how I can help ease my pains and frustrations. It helps to relieve my anxiety when I have a physcial pain, such as a migraine or cramp.

When I was a nurse practitioner student, one of my preceptors turned me on to this handy pocket manual. What a great tool! I have just ordered my second one, as my first one is getting ratty from being in my coat pocket and from over use! A great bargain and jam packed with handy tips and charts. Just the right size for the pocket. I have recommended this to other students over and over again.

I’ve referenced this countless times during my medical rotations especially when writing up my SOAP notes. Has need to know stuff on writing notes, body systems, specialties, and some Spanish in the back. I’ve been rotating in South Miami and that medical Spanish section has come in mighty handy.

this pocket pal is very useful but the information/contents are old and needs to be updated.

I was born and raised in LA and this book opened my eyes to places I never knew about! About 6 months ago I got a fit bit and it’s recommended that I walk 10,000 steps a day and I was shocked at how little I walk during the work week. So I’ve been trying to walk more in the mornings, evenings and after work, but there’s nothing exciting around where I live. This book has encouraged me to get off my butt and discover these interesting places to walk to/around. I feel like I’m getting to know my city in a way I never had before. The pictures in the book also help me visualize where I’m about to go explore before I even get there.

I’m an East Coast guy who took a while to develop an appreciation for L.A. I wish this book was around when I moved here. Haddad’s enthusiasm & knowledge shine through on every page. Well-written & well-curated. I can’t do the treadmill thing and have already done 4 of these walks, including one in Baldwin Hills near my house. I had no idea about its history of the broken dam that killed 5 people & wiped out 250 homes. The book uncovers decades of layers like that. Also did the one that takes you to all the old canals that used to line Venice Beach. Can’t wait to hit the old western towns in the valley!

I live in a part of LA that is rich in history, and this book nails both my Eastside hood and so many others I knew little about. The narration does a great job of providing details without getting too in the weeds, a nice mix of cultural-historic landmarks and pop culture trivia – for example, anyone who loves Walt Disney will find a lot of references to his life in the walks. The directions are easy to follow, with really clear maps. I like how the text is highlighted whenever there’s a directional change. Great gift for Angeleno friends or newbies who love exploring the city by foot.

On the way home from Katalina Winter’s birthday dinner celebrating her 18th birthday, there’s an accident. Lives are lost and a young woman’s world is turned upside down. Things are not what they seem and those childhood stories, could be true.

This was an awesome book! The first chapter starts off with a bang and it never stops throughout the book. Who are these were-people? Why are they keeping Katalina against her will and why is Jackson so angry? Katalina, or Kat, has much to learn about herself and the author gives you bits and pieces throughout the story. When the time is right, of course. There is always something going on and when there isn’t, there’s always a question to be answered.

The only thing I didn’t like about this book was Jackson’s character. So, he’s pissed at the world for another pack taking his mate from him. How does that ever solve anything? Towards the end, he tends to lighten up a bit. Which is good, yet puzzling. The question is, as the pack’s alpha, is he going to let Kat talk to him the way she does and get away with it? He’s going to suddenly come to terms with her not listening him and things will be all hunky dory from there on? Just like that? There should’ve been a conversation between Jackson and Kat about that at some point in the book. I can’t believe Jackson would just let something like that go. He didn’t seem like that type of character.

The rest of the book was wonderfully written. Kat’s character was very well developed, but Bass’s character lacked a lot. He’s the mysterious one and maybe he’s meant to be that way, but I didn’t learn a lot about him other than he was a bit of a loner and conflicted with his dad wuite a bit. The other supporting characters were great.
***** FIVE AWESOME STARS*****

Congratulations to Rachel on being picked up by #Skyscape
I am currently reading my copy of the Re-edited version of #WinterWolf and its just as awesome as ever, tighter and more polished, I get to fall in love with Bass all over again and look for the new content in the re-edited version.

This book is great for all readers – Teen to the Adults who never want to grow up and loose that wonder of young love and Paranormal romance.

Seriously I will read YA until I croak – its one of my favourite Genre.

The thing that I most liked about this book is that the story is that the heroine Katalina (Kat) is not a simpering girl, she is thrown into circumstances beyond her control, but she soon finds her feet, sticks to her principles and copes admirably when she finds out where her true parentage lies.

Kat isn’t going to cower down to her Birth Father’s demands, no one is going to tell her who she can love… and she has some nice hunky shifters to choose from too 😉

Bass – well Drool! there were so many bits I highlighted or that brought a lump to my throat, there is a bit of sadness with Kat’s parents dying and the funeral. But overall its a great love story.

Both Bass and Kat are determined to stay together, and end the feud that has decimated both packs, but it won’t be easy for them either.

The supporting cast are great too, and that is another thing I loved about it, we get to know a little about the members of the two Waring packs and I am dying to read book 2,3… (I hope that these characters Bug Rachel constantly so we can continue to delve into their world) and where we will no doubt catch up with Kat and Bass.

The Windup Girl Audible – Unabridged

The Windup Girl Audible – Unabridged ridged
Author: Paolo Bacigalupi ID: B002P9T7ZI

Anderson Lake is a company man, AgriGen’s Calorie Man in Thailand. Under cover as a factory manager, Anderson combs Bangkok’s street markets in search of foodstuffs thought to be extinct, hoping to reap the bounty of history’s lost calories. There, he encounters Emiko…Emiko is the Windup Girl, a strange and beautiful creature. One of the New People, Emiko is not human; instead, she is an engineered being, creche-grown and programmed to satisfy the decadent whims of a Kyoto businessman, but now abandoned to the streets of Bangkok. Regarded as soulless beings by some, devils by others, New People are slaves, soldiers, and toys of the rich in a chilling near future in which calorie companies rule the world, the oil age has passed, and the side effects of bio-engineered plagues run rampant across the globe. What happens when calories become currency? What happens when bio-terrorism becomes a tool for corporate profits, when said bio-terrorism’s genetic drift forces mankind to the cusp of post-human evolution? In The Windup Girl, award-winning author Paolo Bacigalupi returns to the world of The Calorie Man (Theodore Sturgeon Memorial Award-winner, Hugo Award nominee, 2006) and Yellow Card Man (Hugo Award nominee, 2007) in order to address these poignant questions.BONUS AUDIO: In an exclusive introduction, author Paolo Bacigalupi explains how a horrible trip to Thailand led to the idea for The Windup Girl.

Thai generip terror.

It Bacigalupi ever writes anything that is sweetness and light, that right there would be likely proof of the Many Worlds Theory and the fact that you had slipped into an alternate universe.

The setting is Bangkok, or, colloquially, Krung Thep. It is also a near future dystopia. The city now houses many displaced Chinese refugees from a Malaysia turned fundamentalist muslim fanatics. (See his story Yellow Card Man for background) Bangkok itself is only kept from drowning by engineering and technology.

This is a post-oil world, with very little petroleum technology available, remaining. No evidence of solar tech, either, really. Power is provided by human labor and genetically engineered highly efficient animals pourding kinetic energy into springs, which then can be used to power machines. Treadle computers, even. Countries have shrunk in upon themselves as a result, but are beginning to look outward again, with ships, and dirigibles. This makes this setting rather unlike the mass-media or AI ridden future India and Brasil etc. of Ian McDonald’s devising.

Particularly nasty are the ‘calorie companies’ – organisations that have the ability to manufacture crops in large supply: but their crops are sterile, so you always need to go back for more. That is if bugs and plagues ‘weevils’ and ‘blister rust’ do not get them. Much dirty, violent dealing in support of this activity (see his story The Calorie Man) and there are mentions of it going horribly wrong in other countries. One of the questions this raises is how they manage to stay around – why, with such hatred of them, are the calorie men and women not mercilessly hunted and slaughtered. The only intimations you get of this are economic power, based in the USA.
Paolo Bacigalupi’s debut novel The Windup Girl is a frightening, realistic and brilliant look at the near future of the world. Taking place in Thailand at some point in the future, Bacigalupi paints a picture of a world that is caught between several major problems: climate change has affected the lives of many people around the world, and in turn, has brought a rise in global agricultural corporations, and global energy resources have been depleted, forcing major changes in the way people live their lives, and how a world-wide economy functions with different resources. Corporations have run amok with trying to maintain their profit margins, and released a number of plagues upon the world that devastated the planet’s ecology upon which we all depend, and because of their actions, remain just a single step ahead of the latest mutation of blister rust and other assorted plagues. Thailand is a country that has thus far weathered the storm – the Royal government has maintained a fierce isolationist policy to keep the country from succumbing. As a result, Thailand has a precious resource that western companies desperately want: a genebank, containing thousands of new strains of crops that could be utilized to combat the ongoing struggle against plagues and hunger world-wide.

The story follows several discrete storylines and characters, each with their own motivations and demons. Anderson is a `calorie man’, a westerner who ostensibly manages a factory that manufactures kink-springs, a renewable power source. Jaidee is a member of the Environmental Ministry, tasked with maintaining a barrier between Thailand and the rest of the world and the dangers that it poses.
Paolo Bacigalupi was an unfamiliar name to me, but this novel received frothing praise and an unusually good cover, so I gifted it to my dad knowing I’d eventually get a crack at reading it (books are good like that).

This is a debut novel, and a quick glance at Bacigalupi’s previous work reveals a volume of short stories that includes titles like Pump Six, Yellow Card Man and The Calorie Man. He has been crafting this world for a while now, the culmination of which is The Windup Girl. It’s a cynical but splendidly imagined projection of the near future: fossil fuels are rare and exorbitantly expensive; global warming has raised sea level and weather patterns are volatile; misadventures in bioengineering have ravaged the world with plagues of viruses, bacteria, fungus and insects; corporate interests gain power as regional governments succumb to revolt.

This apocalyptic Thailand is plausible but miserable. You will not gasp at the majesty of steampunk invention here – you will likely gag. Windup’s Bangkok is full of feral cats, religious and political fanatics, refugees and opportunistic businessmen. The resident crime boss is named the Dung Lord, and he vies for power along with Trade Minister Akkarat and General Pracha, the victor of a military junta at the narrative’s outset. The cast of characters are all hard-bitten, all nursing personal grievances, all hopelessly driven to do what they end up doing. Anderson Lake (a great name for this anti-hero, but they’re all good) is an American agribusinessman sent to Thailand with the objective of gaining access to the Kingdom’s jealously-guarded seed stock. While pursuing this goal, he becomes entangled with Emiko, the genetically-engineered courtesan of the novel’s title.

The SPEED of Trust

The SPEED of Trust: The One Thing that Changes Everything Hardcover – October 17, 2006
Author: Visit ‘s Stephen M.R. Covey Page ID: 074329730X

From Publishers Weekly

Trust is so integral to our relationships that we often take it for granted, yet in an era marked by business scandals and a desire for accountability this book by leadership expert Covey is a welcome guide to nurturing trust in our professional and personal lives. Drawing on anecdotes and business cases from his years as CEO of the Covey Leadership Center (which was worth $160 million when he orchestrated its 1997 merger with Franklin Quest to form Franklin Covey), the author effectively reminds us that there’s plenty of room for improvement on this virtue. Following a touching foreword by father Stephen R. Covey (author of The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People and related books), the junior Covey outlines 13 behaviors of trust-inspiring leaders, such as demonstrating respect, creating transparency, righting wrongs, delivering results and practicing accountability. Covey’s down-to-earth approach and disarming personal stories go a long way to establish rapport with his reader, though the book’s length and occasional lack of focus sometimes obscure its good advice. Review

Covey convincingly validates our experience at Dell — that trust has a bottom-line impact on results and that when trust goes up, speed goes up while costs come down. This principle applies not only in our professional relationships with customers, business partners, and team members but also in our personal relationships, which makes this insightful book all the more valuable.”
— Kevin Rollins, President and CEO, Dell Inc.

“This book can change lives. Covey helps us understand how to nurture and inspire immediate trust in every encounter, which is the foundation for true and lasting success in life. A very interesting and enlightening read.”
— Larry King

“Covey brilliantly focuses on that overlooked bedrock of democratic capitalism — trust. Like the air we breathe, we too often take this critical intangible for granted. As Covey makes clear, we do so at our ultimate competitive peril.”
— Steve Forbes, President and CEO, Forbes

“Want to be an irresistible positive force? Combine personal responsibility with compassion and respect for others. Want to know how to do this perfectly? Read The Speed of Trust.”
— Dr. Laura Schlessinger, internationally syndicated radio host and author of The Proper Care and Feeding of Marriage

“Covey’s book underscores the single most important factor — the substrate — that will determine the success (or failure) of any organization in the 21st century: TRUST. This is a powerful read: brave, imaginative, amazingly prescient, and backed up by empirical and analytical heft. A must-read for anyone in a position of responsibility, from a support group to a global corporation.”
— Warren Bennis, Distinguished Professor of Business Administration, USC, and author of On Becoming a Leader

“This much-needed book provides many practical examples of how greater trust produces better results, at less cost, sooner — at work and in life. It’s invaluable.”
— Spencer Johnson, M.D., author of Who Moved My Cheese? and coauthor of The One Minute Manager

“Stephen Covey’s work changed the world. I’d bet the price of this exciting book and more that his son, Stephen M. R. Covey, will have at least as much impact. The Speed of Trust is an amazing book, starting with its novel and powerful title — my greatest wonder was why it hadn’t been written before. From the epigraph — ‘Speed happens when people truly trust each other’ — to the closing bell, this is a book worth savoring — and implementing.”
— Tom Peters

“When I received this book and was asked to read it and offer my comments, my first impulse was, ‘I don’t have the time.’ However, as I read the foreword, then the first few chapters, I could not put it down. It is exactly what business leaders need today. This book gets to the core roots of ethical behavior and integrity and how ‘trusted’ leaders and organizations do things better, faster, and at lower cost. Everyone should make the time to read this book.”
— Nolan D. Archibald, Chairman and CEO, The Black & Decker Corporation

“I am happier when I am trusted, and I bet you are too. Covey has done a masterful job teaching that trust is conditioned on our behavior and that we can consciously shift our behavior to deserve trust. This one realization can change your life. This is the best book by a Covey since 7 Habits.”
— Richard Carlson, Ph.D., author of Don’t Sweat the Small Stuff and Don’t Get Scrooged

Trust can make things easier, and distrust can definitely make things much harder. You already know that. But do you know how to check out where you need to change in order to create more beneficial trust? The Speed of Trust can help those who need a template for such self-examination.

Mr. Stephen M. R. Covey is the son of Dr. Stephen R. Covey of 7 Habits of Highly Effective People fame. If you’ve read that famous book, you may remember young Stephen referred to by his father as the seven-year-old son who was asked to keep the yard "clean and green" and did neither at first. Dr. Covey writes the foreword for this book and refers to that example. Ms. Rebecca Merrill helped with the writing of Dr. Stephen R. Covey’s book First Things First which was coauthored by Roger Merrill.

Trust is expressed by a paradigm that includes five waves of trust (self trust based on the principle of credibility, relationship trust based on the principle of proper behavior, organizational trust based on the principle of alignment, market trust based on the principle of reputation, and societal trust based on the principle of contribution). Most of the book is taken up with examining those five waves and their underlying principles. The core of the book comes, however, in the 13 behaviors that establish trust (talk straight, demonstrate respect, create transparency, right wrongs, show loyalty, get better, confront reality, clarify expectations, practice accountability, listen first, keep commitments, and extend trust). Each section of the book comes with ways to check on your performance and to create plans for improvement.

This book is by far the best development of the subject of creating and restoring trust that I have read. That makes the book an essential reference.
There is one thing that is common to every individual, organization, nation, and civilization throughout the world–one thing which, if removed, will destroy the most powerful government, the most successful business, the most thriving economy, the most influential leadership, the greatest friendship, and the deepest love. On the other hand, if developed and leveraged, that one thing has the potential to create unparalleled success and prosperity in every dimension of life. According to the author, that one thing is trust.

The author says that "The Five Waves of Trust" define the way we establish trust and make it actionable. Understanding these waves will enable you to speak and behave in ways that establish trust, allowing you to become a leader who gets results by inspiring trust in others.

First Wave: Self Trust. The key principle underlying this wave is credibility.
Second Wave: Relationship Trust. The key principle underlying this wave is consistent behavior.
Third Wave: Organizational Trust. The key principle underlying this wave, alignment, helps leaders create organizational trust.
Fourth Wave: Market Trust. The underlying principle behind this wave is reputation.
Fifth Wave: Societal Trust. The principle underlying this wave is contribution.

Here is a list of useful concepts I liked in the book:

Trust is the "hidden variable" in the formula for organizational success. The traditional business formula is: (Strategy x Execution = Results). But there is a hidden variable: (Strategy x Execution) x Trust = Results.

Trust always affects two outcomes: speed and cost. When trust goes down, speed goes down and cost goes up.
This book was distributed at work like candy at a Halloween party. New buzz words were written on the board and everyone was trust falling one another. The problem still remains: there’s more falling than trusting.

I enjoyed the first chapter and agree with the author’s sentiments: as trust improves, cost goes down and speed increases. I believe in Covey’s see, speak, behave architecture. The problem begins when Covey stretches the first chapter into over three hundred pages based on an analogy that doesn’t hold water (intentional pun).

The book reads more like Chicken Soup for the Corporate Soul versus a true introspection into business practice. There are some interesting stories, but beyond that, there’s not much to offer. The book seemed more tailored to stroke the egos of Covey’s corporate partners versus giving a hardened look at trust improvement.

Covey’s stories are full of fluff (back to the Chicken Soup comparison). He incorporates vague intensifiers at every opportunity: totally, apparently, extremely, really, very. "As luck would have it", over-worn clichés are not immune. These stories are used to help us accept a weak analogy on how to build trust.

Some stories were outright ludicrous. For instance, he determines the start of personal trust can be contained in such things as not hitting snooze on the alarm clock, but arising on the first ring, sleep deprived or not. I’m sorry, but this doesn’t fly with me. Maybe this is because I buy more into Mitch Albom’s The Timekeeper philosophy. I don’t believe my life is defined by an alarm clock.

I was most offended in Covey’s comparisons of Gandhi and the CEOs on Wall Street.
